Also known as the "Long-Haired Sheltie," the Texel is an exotic breed
of cavy. Recently developed in England, the breed was officially recognized
by the ACBA (American Cavy Breeders Association) in 1998.
What makes a Texel a Texel? Long, thick, soft hair that forms ringlets
or curls over the entire body, including the belly. The hair is quite
dense and requires daily grooming. The body is short and compact, and
the head is broad and well-rounded.
As newborns, Texels have a thick coat of short hair which is indistinguishable
from that of Rex cavies, their shorter-haired cousins. As they grow,
their long, beautiful curls grow too -- up to six inches in length!
In addition to its unique appearance, the Texel has also been bred for
its excellent disposition. Calm, friendly, affectionate, and very intelligent,
the Texel is a fabulous companion.
